Willem II in Tilburg als briefschrijver

Datering van de gebeurtenis: 1831-1839

Willem II was een flamboyante persoonlijkheid, waar Tilburg het nodige aan te danken heeft. Er is al veel over hem geschreven maar weinig over hem als briefschrijver.
Internationaal het meest bekend is zijn brief in 1844 aan de shogun van Japan, met het dringende advies om de Japanse havens open te stellen voor buitenlandse schepen.

Met het recent (her)openen van de Russische staatsarchieven werd het mogelijk de intensieve correspondentie van Willem II met zijn schoonfamilie, de tsarenfamilie Romanov, te inventariseren (1). 

Brieven aan de Ramanovs
Uit een analyse van die brieven blijkt dat hij gedurende zijn leven in Nederland, de periode 1815 tot zijn overleden in 1849, totaal 243 brieven aan de Romanovs heeft gestuurd. De meeste (207 stuks) aan zijn zwager Nicolaas I, de tsaar van Rusland van 1825 tot 1855.

Gedurende zijn negen jaar in Tilburg, van 1831 tot 1839, slechts zeventien.

Brieven aan zijn vader
De minder-goede verhouding tussen Willem II en zijn vader koning Willem I had tot gevolg dat hij zijn aanwezigheid in Den Haag zo beperkt mogelijk hield. Op basis van het aantal brieven in het Koninklijk Huisarchief gericht aan zijn vader blijkt dat Willem II liever met zijn vader correspondeerde dan converseerde.
In die negen Tilburgse jaren, 1831-1839, stuurde Willem II vanuit Tilburg 350(!) brieven aan zijn vader. Deze 350 Tilburgse brieven vormen dus het merendeel van het totaal aantal van 602 brieven aan zijn vader in die negen jaar (2).
 Als de verhouding, van 350 tot 602 brieven, in negen jaar een indicatie is van de tijd dat hij hier daadwerkelijk in Tilburg was, zou dat betekenen dat hij hier een vijf jaar of gedurende 2.000 dagen is geweest!

De meest intensieve briefwisseling vond plaats in het jaar 1832 waarin Willem II vanuit Tilburg, in ruim een half jaar tijd, 109 brieven schreef. Vanaf 21 juni t/m december 1832; dus gemiddeld om-de-dag een brief aan zijn vader vanuit Tilburg!
Wat waren de onderwerpen van deze wel zeer intensieve briefwisseling toen?

De brieven, ook aan zijn vader, waren in het Frans gesteld, de internationaal aanvaarde hoftaal. Brieven aan zijn vader met als aanhef ‘Mon cher Pere’ en naar zijn zwager tsaar Nicolaas I met aanhef ‘Mon cher Nicolas’
Een beperkt aantal van de Russische brieven is volledig vertaald. Een tijdrovend werk omdat het schrift van Willem II moeilijk te ontcijferen is en het Frans ofwel veel taalfouten bevat ofwel in een oude spelling is (afb. 2).

Als we een ruwe schatting maken van de tijd besteed in Tilburg aan het brieven schrijven en daarbij uitgaan van gemiddeld twee uur per - vaak uitvoerige - brief dan heeft Willem II in Tilburg in die negen jaar minstens zevenhonderd uur besteed aan het schrijven van deze brieven.
Brieven aan particulieren en verdere buitenlandse kontakten zijn hierbij nog niet meegeteld.

Zoals blijkt uit het onderstaande overzicht van de inhoud van de zeventien Tilburgse brieven aan zijn schoonfamilie in Rusland, zijn de onderwerpen overwegend de landelijke dan wel Europese politiek. In mindere mate familie aangelegenheden.
Curieus is de brief van mei 1834, waarin hij zijn zwager Nicolaas I bedankt voor de verstrekte lening. Zoals bekend leed Willen II permanent aan geldgebrek en zijn kunstverzameling diende bij deze leningen als onderpand.

Als we proberen om Willem II al schrijvend voor te stellen in zijn woning aan de toenmalige Nieuwe Dijk (afb. 3) of op zijn zomerverblijf op Koningshoeve (afb. 4), dan kan dat nog schrijvend met een ganzenveer. Pas rond 1820 kwamen geleidelijk aan de stalen schrijfpennen in zwang, te beginnen in Engeland. Maar ganzenveren bleven tot midden negentiende eeuw het meest economisch.

Onderstaand de onderwerpen in achttien brieven van kroonprins Willem II aan zijn Russische schoonfamilie in de jaren 1831-1839. Brief 1 is vanuit ‘tussen Tilburg en Breda’ en de resterende zeventien vanuit Tilburg. Daarvan is brief 5 uit 1831 aan zijn schoonzuster met de overige zestien gericht aan zijn zwager Tsaar Nicolaas I.

1. nr. 1466.5/338; (Za.) 3-9-1831. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I about his successful, 10 day long military campaign, about the negotiations with Belgium.
He congratulates him on the birth of the son of Nikolay I, Grand Duke Nikolay. Between Tilburg and Breda.

2. 1466.5/340; (Zo.) 9-10-1831. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I about the second week of the truce with Belgium, about the separate peace in the future.
He expresses his hopes that this peace will be profitable for the Netherlands, and at the same he expresses his worries about the reaction of his father, King Willem I, on the necessary condition for a peace agreement in Europe. This condition is that the sovereignty of Belgium should be recognised, while the fact that Prussia and Austria have not recognised Leopold as King of Belgium will be confirmed, etc. Tilburg.

3. 1466.5/341; (Do.) 20-10-1831. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I about conditions of an agreement, pressed on the Dutch Kingdom during the conference by the five European powers. The Netherlands was offered a prolonged armistice, usage of its weapons after 25 October was prohibited, domestic debt was divided between the sovereign Belgium and the Netherlands, some parts of the Netherlands were handed over to France and the German Federation. He also writes about his own ideas on subsequent developments. Tilburg.

4. 1466.5/342; (Za.) 22-10-1831. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He congratulates him on the successful completion of the Warsaw operation. He writes about the negotiations of Nikolay I with the Kings of Prussia and Austria, about his own opinion on the proposals of the Russian tsar to King Willem I, etc. Tilburg.

5. 730/13; (Do.) 27-10-1831. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. He writes that due to the ending of the cease-fire with Belgium he cannot meet Elena Pavlovna. He hopes that the next meeting will take place soon. Tilburg.

6. 1466.6/352; (Zo.) 19-8-1832. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I about the relations between Russia, one of the greatest European powers, and the Netherlands, about the politics of his own father, King Willem I. Tilburg.

7. 1466.6/353; (Vr.) 7-9-1832. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I about military manoeuvres of the Dutch army, about Bligh, the successor of Charles Bagot (*), Duke Wellington, about the attitude of France and Great Brit-ain towards the Dutch-Belgian question, etc. Tilburg.

8. 1466.6/354; (Wo.) 14-11-1832. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I, congratulating him on the birthday of his son, Grand Duke Mikhail. He informs him on the military expedition of France to besiege Antwerp, and about subsequent developments in Belgium. Tilburg.

9. 1466.7/356; (Ma.) 8-7-1833. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He thanks him for the steamship to Lubeck, which Nikolay had sent for him. Because of the military operations and the necessity to be personally present with the army, he must reject this proposal. He informs him that Fritz * and Louise * have had a son and ask him to be the child's godfather. Tilburg.

10.1466.7/358; (Ma.) 4-11-1833. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He informs him on the coming visit of his son to Russia for meeting his family; he entrusts his son Willem to "the kind attention" of Nikolay I. He asks Nikolay to come to an agreement with him about the date of the tsar's coming visit to the south of Russia, in connection with the Turkish campaign. "Our domestic business is going well, we have never had such unity between the States General and the Government." He also mentions the Schwartzenberg (*) mission. Tilburg.
(*) Chamberlain Felix von Schwartzenberg (1800-1852) went on a mission to the Hague on behalf of the Austrian Emperor to mediate in the negotiations between Willem I and the German Confederation over Luxembourg.

11. 1466.7/366; (Ma.) 12-5-1834. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He is grateful that Nikolay supports his politics in the Belgian question. He gives a detailed journey plan of his son Hendrik to Russia via Kronstadt in two weeks. Tilburg.

12. 1466.7/368; (Za.) 10-5-1834. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He expresses his gratitude for the loan. Tilburg.

13. 1466.7/369; (Za.) 5-7-1834. By Willem, Prince of Orange to Tsar Nikolay I.
He thanks him for the kind reception of his son Hendrik. The author writes about his ideas on the upbringing of his son, about his son's attitude towards his military duties. He cannot wait to receive a second letter from his son, describing his impressions of Russia and his stay in Peterhof. "No news here." Tilburg.

Letter of recommendation for Captain /Van der Goltz/, officer of the hussars under Prince Frederik, for his stay in Russia. Tilburg.

15. 1466.7/377; (Di.) 19-5-1835. By Willem, Prince of Orange, to Tsar Nikolay I.
He writes about Prince Hendrik, who is leaving for East India, and about Prince Aleksandr, who is enlisted to the grenadiers’ battalion. "The political affairs concerning us are unchanged." Tilburg.

He writes about Grand Duke Mikhail, about Anna Pavlovna, and about his children. Tilburg.
